 Miss San Antonio 2009

Miss San Antonio 2009 is Alanna Sarabia, a 19-year-old sophomore at Texas State University where she is majoring in Mass Communications with a minor in Dance.  She plans to pursue a career in Radio and Television Broadcasting.  She is the daughter of Rick and Lorraine Sarabia of Spring Branch, Texas

Alanna is a 2007 graduate of South Grand Prairie High School where she was an honor student and cheerleader for 4 years.  She was awarded All American Cheerleader one year and nominated “All American” all 4 years by the NCA.  She was also elected “Cheerleader of the Year” by her fellow cheerleaders her senior year.

Alanna devoted her senior year to the “Shattered Dreams” project.  Shattered Dreams is a filmed mock accident involving student actors in a drunk driving drama.  Alanna was Co-Executive Producer of this project which involved writing, filming, editing and securing the major offices that needed to be involved, such as Care Flight, fire department and police department.  She also had the role of the student that died in the movie.  As part of the Shattered Dreams program the Senior and Junior class had to attend her funeral the day before prom.  The goal of Shattered Dreams is to make the students think of the consequences of drinking and driving.

She also spent many hours working with at- risk children as part of her student-mentoring program.  Alanna is also a trained peer mediator and a gymnastics coach.

Alanna was awarded many honors in high school.  She was elected class favorite for her freshman, sophomore, and junior year.  She was elected Homecoming Queen and Most Beautiful her senior year.   She also won the Grand Prairie Arts Council Scholarship for her works in the arts and the Cinco de Mayo Scholarship.

Miss Sarabia began studying piano at the age of 4.  She won the Clyde E. Whitlock Theory Medal Award for ten years in a row.  She also received superior rating at the Texas Music Teacher’s Association All -Star Music Festival.  Alanna won 2nd place in the Grand Prairie Music Teacher’s Association Chopin Award and Scholarship Competition.  She enjoys playing classical music in her leisure time.

Dancing became a source of exercise for Alanna at the age of 10.  It quickly became a new love and part of her formal education along with piano.  She was a member of the Ultimate Elite Dance Co. in Duncanville, Texas, winning various platinum and high gold awards.  She has trained at the Broadway Dance Center in New York City, The Edge and Millennium in Los Angeles.

Working and fund-raising for Breast Cancer Awareness and Education with her Zeta Tau Alpha sorority sisters kept Alanna busy her freshman year at Texas State.  Along with working information booths, collecting Yoplait yogurt lids and selling pink ribbon t-shirts, Alanna participated in the “Race for the Cure” in San Antonio and “Run for Life” in New Braunfels.

Alanna’s platform is to help San Antonio to become a “no kill” city.  She will be visiting schools to explain to the children why their pets need to be spayed and neutered.  Alanna spends some of her days off from work and school volunteering at the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter, a “no kill” facility.  She plays with the dogs and cats so they can have a human touch and some one-on-one attention, while they are waiting to be adopted.

Alanna knows well the incredible diversity of arts, culture, entertainment and ambiance for which San Antonio is famous.  She is very honored to have this opportunity to promote and represent San Antonio during her reign.
